Causes and Mechanism of Varicose Vein Development
In Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Louise Ferland, is dedicated to educating her patients about varicose veins.  To understand the treatment of varicose veins, it is important to understand their cause, venous insufficiency. Our heart pumps blood through the arteries to the tissues.  Oxygen and nutrients are delivered to our tissue through an exchange mechanism.  Waste and by products are exchanged for the needed oxygen.  Waste and by products then circulates back to the heart and lungs through the veins. The pressure in the arteries is high.  The pressure in the veins is low.  In the head, arms, and chest, gravity helps pull blood into the heart aided by gravity. However gravity works against the return of blood from the legs. One-way valves in the leg veins are very important for the return of blood to the heart. When we walk, the veins are compressed by our leg muscles.   Muscle action and one-way valves help push the blood up the veins in the legs. When the valves work properly the direction of blood is only in one direction; up towards the heart. When these valves leak, the blood goes up and down.  Because blood flows freely downward, high pressure and pooling of blood in the leg veins occurs.  This results in veins, which are normally under low pressure to be under high pressure.  This is why veins engorge and are seen as bulging.   The leaky or insufficient valves are the underlying mechanism of varicose vein disease.
